Journal entry by Martin:
Me and the intended left Singapore for a 11 hour flight to Cape Town. We stayed in a hostel near to town called the Backpack which is one of the better hostels we have stayed in during our whole trip.
The only problem was that our room mate (Rusty from Canada) appeared to be attempting to break the world record for the loadest and longest fart. Pretty impressive as he was asleep. He managed to wake everyone up but remained fast asleep.
After 2 days we had to move rooms and were disappointed to find that Rusty had been moved to the same room. That night he attempted to beat his own farting record.
He moved out after this - thank god.
We spent the first few days lazing around on the beach (for a change). On the third day we went on a wine tasting tour of Stellenbosch. It was a good day out and we sampled over 20 wines. On the tour we met Kristi from Chicago and spent most of the rest of the week with her.
The weather then took a turn for the worse and it really clouded over in Cape Town. Gem made the decision that we should look for an engagement ring. We looked in about 30 jewellers over 2 days as she wanted to be sure she got 'the one'. 'The one' was in the first shop we went into.
The weather cleared up a bit so we decided to go up Table Mountain. The views from the bottom of the cable car are amazing but nothing prepares you for the views from the top.
The next day we rented a car and drove south to the Cape of Good Hope.
On the way we stopped off at Boulder Beach to see the penguins. I didn't expect to get so close to them. There was no security or anything so you could quite easily steal a penguin if you wanted.
On the trip we also encountered baboons on a few occasions (including a baby baboon who had ears like Gems), mongooses, elands and ostriches.
We also went to The Africa Cafe with Kristi and a bloke from Oz. They serve foods from all over Africa . There were 15 course - all of which were delicious. All of the staff sing and play drums throughout the night. Definitely one of the best restaurants we have ever been to.
On the subject of food, we cooked out first meal this year in Cape Town. You always eat out in Asia and the last time I remember making anything for myself was heating up some soup in Melbourne in Mid-December. I kept up with tradition by heating up some soup in Cape Town just over 3 months later.
Next stop Johannesburg for a night before moving on to Kruger National Park for our safari. I can't wait!
