If in Germany you have to visit Heidelberg. Never a disappointment.

The old city with castle above the town , the old bridges across the river are always a picture.

 We found a great little hotel right next to the main town square ( Rathaus hotel). This took a little bit of effort as the local tourist office was pretty useless. We went straight out to walk the town as there were evening markets and plenty of people.

Had a dinner from the stalls ( cooked mushrooms , big German sausages and hot wine under the moonlight),people skating , lights and in the middle of the old town - terrific.

We spent the next day in the old castle on the hill with a spectacular view of the entire city. The tour was a treat with a witty German guide who kept making jokes and telling us all about the history of the castle as well as a few other stories. The rest of the day was spent shopping and recuperating. Our last night before the flight on New year's eve. (Sniff)
