It's all about the PFA

Text written in: English

PFA stands for "Positive Freakin' Attitude."

I learned about my first spike yesterday, and even though it may not be my dream placement, I'm actually very excited for it. So here goes:

I am going to be working at an elementary school about three blocks away from base, so I will be staying in Sacramento. We'll be tutoring, aiding teachers, organizing recess, and helping out with after school programs. They really need the help, about 50% of the kids that start school don't finish (and these are K-5th graders!!), and a majority of the kids come from poor families, some not living with their parents at all (due to death or incarceration). It's good to know that we'll really be making a difference in a lot of kids lives. Education was not my first choice, but that might actually turn into a good thing. I figure that since this placement is not something that I would have done otherwise, it will help me grow and challenge me in so many ways. And even though other people are going to Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Washington; I'm okay with staying in Sacramento. At first I was a little bummed, but it's not like I'm not going to get my chance to travel later. And Sacramento is really close to a lot of awesome places: Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, San Francisco, Reno, Napa Valley, etc. And everyone on my team is willing to go on weekend trips. Plus Sacramento needs a lot of help, so there will be plenty of opportunities to get some ISP hours (Independent Service Project--I need 100), so hopefully I can take care of that while I'm here. And if anyone wants to come visit me and go skiing in Tahoe, I'd be okay with that too.

So I could sulk and be upset that I didn't get my first choices, but honestly, the more I think about it, the more excited I get. It's all about looking at the bright side, so don't worry about me, I'm very happy with how this turned out.

So I'll be in Sacramento until sometime in February, which means I'll have easy access to the internet, mail will reach me quicker, and I'll have my own room!!
