Somehow my family's ill fortune of going on vacations and bringing the rain did not hold up for me this past weekend. In the past we've gone to places in a draught and when we got there it rained. And then I go to Seattle, Washington: the place where it rains all the time, and no rain. Literally there was no precipitation at all. We arrived on Saturday (I drove four hours to get there in a rental car that literally smelled like baby poop) and it was a little cloudy, but no rain. We checked out Pike Place Public Market and walked around a bit before checking in to our hotel. We went back down to Pike Place for a while and ate dinner there. We saw the World Famous Fish place, you'll know what it is if you've ever seen the motivational film, "Fish!" And that was really exciting. Sunday was a big day for us. We first went to the Experience Music Project (EMP), which is in the same complex as the Space Needle. There were fun exhibits, but the best part was the jam session place where you could go into a room and play whichever instrument they had in it. There were drums, guitars, keyboards, and a vocal room. I didn't do too well on the guitar, but the other three were tons of fun! After that we went downtown to go on an Underground tour, since originally Seattle was lower, but after a big fire the city officials decided to build it up 10-30 feet, and they had left the area below for underground shopping. Though after a few years it got condemned because there were rats so now the space is used for touring. It was a really neat tour, and having a student id that doesn't expire is so amazing here, we saved 2-4 dollars off of everything we did. After the tour we heard about Smith Tower, which apparently has the best view of Seattle from the observation deck. Yeah it does. The sky was cloudless and blue, and the sun was almost setting. It was an amazing sight. We could see Mt Rainier and the Cascade mountains, plus Puget Sound and all of the buildings around us. We could even see the Space Needle, which is not as big as you think it is. Smith Tower, along with most of the older buildings in Pioneer Square, is built from the original ground, so it has 42 stories, but two of them are underground. It's a pretty neat city, though I feel like I have an unrealistic view of it since there was no rain. We watched the sun set at the Sculpture Park right on the water, it was beautiful. Sunday night we drove across Union Lake to Fremont; we had heard it was the place to be if you were young and hip, though who has the right to define hip? We ate at a Greek restaurant and went back to the hotel. Monday we walked around Pike Place again, getting some last minute souveniers and pictures. Liz and Adam got coffee at all three of Seattle's chain coffee shops (Tully's, Seattle's Best, and Starbucks). Then we headed home in our smelly car, and for all of our suffering they gave us $20 off of an already amazing deal. (All in all we spent $40 (plus $57 on gas) on the car rental for three days..thank you Enterprise for not caring that I'm only 22!!)
